Adjusting Medications with Weight Loss and the Role of the Pharmacists
 
Overall learning objectives: 
  • Describe the pharmacokinetic changes of medications (absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination in obesity
  • Discuss the role that fatty liver disease and obesity have on drug pharmacokinetics
  • Discuss the role of therapeutic drug monitoring with high risk medications
  • Discuss the various considerations in the management for diabetes, thyroid, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and gastroesophageal reflux disorder in relation to management of weight loss
  • Using a case based approach, discuss options for the management of medications for diabetes, thyroid disorders, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and gastrointestinal disorders in situations of weight loss
  • Identify ways to monitor medications and disease state parameters during weight loss
 
Description overall:
The pharmacist is in an excellent position to help make recommendations in management medications in the situation of weight loss. The 3-hour module will focus on reviewing treatment of various medical conditions, reviewing some suggested ways to reduce medications and to monitor for the efficacy and toxicity of medications during weight loss.
